Pre-sakura:plum trees in Tsukuba montain1

Hi everybody,

one of the most important celebration in Japan is the change of season and especially the beginning of spring and the blossom trees blooming. Sakura is the name for the flower of the cherry trees, the most beloved trees in Japan. Their blooming starts at the end of march beginning of April, depending on the year, and I will write about it in one of my next spots. The blossom of the plum trees appear about one month before, warning of the arrival of the new season. Today I will tell you about the latter ones.

The mount Tsukuba (筑波山), which gives its name to the city has a double peak structure, this makes it very characteristic. You can see it in the picture above, that, by the way, is done from the door of my apartment (8th floor). Halfway up the mountain, there is a plum grove. From the 20th of February and during one month, they celebrate there the UME MATSURI festival. We went at the end of February and since in this year winter has been a little bit longer than usually, there were still many "bald" trees, or with their buds about to open (see pictures).

Even so, many plum trees were in blossom showing their nice flowers. These blossom had different colours: some white, other almost violet and other pink, being the later the most common ones. ... and I guess that is enough botanic for today! In the next post I will tell you what could one do at that park apart from watching flowers.

A hug
